How many times has our Beloved Swami said. ‘Why do you look around for God when He is Inside you? Why should you travel here and there when He sits inside you? Do we listen? Have I listened? Yesterday I went to the supermarket h oping to find the Atma, sort of a ‘take out’. Well who is the Atma? God, of course! I’m looking for God in the supermarket when He is Myself inside. Youall must have had a good laugh over that. But actually, God is omnipresent, isn’t He? Or She? He is here and He is there. The Rudram says He is on this river bank and also in the idol on the opposite river bank.
Inside and outside, above you and below you, God is omnipresent. I think it is more important to find God inside, the Atma, inside than in the supermarket because our goal as Sai devotees, is to become one with Sai. We must experience Swami inside if we are to become one with Him.
We may feel that God is in the large red flowers and those beautiful orange butterflies but in order for us to become God He must be inside our hearts.
This is an on-going fight within me. I am always aware of God around me but not so much aware of His inner presence Oh well maybe that’s not so true. I think that I can’t keep my mind from wandering away from Him. I use a picture for my worship. It is a pi cture taken probably twenty years ago and it remains on my bed where I can grab it from time to time in order to explain yo Him what I’m trying to say. I like to say,
Saieshwaraya namaha and touch His magnificent chin. Saieshwaraya is the name He gave the white marble lingam He used during the Adi Rudram Mahayagna. Then I touch His beautiful nose and say, Sathya Devaya Namaha, finally I touch His broad forhead which houses the Universal Mind and say,
Sarveshwaraya Namaha. It is almost His gayatri but not quite and He seems to like it because the picture I use sort of smiles when He is pleased.
But that sort of worship is all on the outside If He is sitting in front of me and at the same time standing in back of me that’s better because its so nice to feel Him inside. I go through periods when I can do that but it doesn’t last because my feelings change. Inside worship is closer to the goal of mergence.
Every morning I bring a large red flower to my sister with my ‘Salutations to the Goddess.’ Now my sister is an Episcopalian but I think she enjoys the feelings of love. It is all an outward display. Yesterday she took me to see a really gorgeous orchid plant in bloom in the patio. It was obviously the Goddess herself sitting in that basket with a lovely dress of golden spray orchids all around her. The basket was sitting behind a large palm tree hidden by firns.
But no one can see her
She can see herself
But what good is she doing there behind the tree
She’s happy there
With all my talk about Goddesses it was obvious that my sister really loved and worshiped the orchid plant where as I was trying to enjoy her myself.
We are going to the supermarket again today for chunky peanutbutter and shredded cheese. I’ll let you know if I find God, or the Goddess or Swami or the Atma. Actually I’m looking for my own glorious divine self
I am the Self in the Heart of all people
I’m the beginning, the middle and the end
I am love, love, love
I am love. Love, love
