My Broadcast !!!

The western Sai Newsletter for Sai Graduates is on the air

Sai Ram everyone and a special Sai Ram to my fellow Sai Graduates

It has been such a short time since our precious Beloved left His body but, because He was the most photographed person in the world. His shining bliss -filled eyes watch us from every one of those pictures.. So even though we will miss the 'side-long glances' in the Hall we will have His Divine Darsan always from millions of photos.

GC starting note G

THERE IS NO BIRTH, THERE IS NO DEATH

THERE IS NO YOU OR I

THERE IS ONLY SATHYA SAI, BELOVED SATHYA SAI

SATHYA SAI, SATHYA SAI, BELOVED SATHYA SAI

Since the passing away of His adorable form, I have been hearing from everyone around that NOW WE MUST GET TO WORK ON HIS MISSION. It is time to put into practice His famous

axioms HELP EVER HURT NEVER, LOVE ALL SERVE ALL AND DO GOOD, BE GOOD, for they point the way to God.

It is true. We must not waste any more time But how shall we serve Him? What shall we do?

Perhaps it is true that any kindness shown to anyone at all wuth a pure heart is service to Swami. Why? Because He is omnipresent. Swami is everyone..

But first we must understand that we ourselves are God. No, first we must understand that He is omnipreent because then logically, we are God. Next we can draw the conclusion that everyone else is God too. Yes, because He is omnipresent.

As Swami has often said,

A D STARTING NOTE A

I AM GOD, I AM GOD

I AM NOT DIFFERENT FROM GOD

I AM THE INDIVISABLE SUPREME ABSOLUTE

I AM SAT CHIT ANANDA

I AM KNOWLEDGE AWARE AND BLISS

GRIEF AND ANXIETY WILL NEVER COME NEAR ME

I AM EVER CONTENT

FEAR CANNOT COME INTO ME

I AM EVER CONTENT, OM TAT SAT

ACTUALLY WE REALLY KNOW THAT WE ARE GOD BECAUSE SWAMI TOLD US SO.

God is love and love is God. LOVE MOREAND MORE PEOPLE MORE AND MORE. TRANSFORM THAT LOVE INTO SERVICE AND TRANSFORM THAT SERVICE INTO WORSHIP. THAT IS THE HIGHEST SPRITUALITY. SWAMI SAID SO

Sharing is caring. On television, Oprah SUGGESTS THE SAME THING. She says we should share our love with others because that will make our lives worth living. Oprah may share her love with millions each day but, it is a worthy act of service to smile and convey your love to an elderly neighbor because it is all God's love and who are we? We are God.

What is a Sai Graduate anyway, you may ask. A Sai Graduate to my way of thinking is a devotee who has benefited from being given Sai's teachings . It doesn't have anything to do with having letters after your name. It is a state of being. Of course it doesn't mean perfection or I wouldn't be doing this writing. It only means that we had the opportunity to study His teachings so that we can live His truth, upon occasion, more often then not and can pick ourselves up off the floor when we fall on our faces. ..and realize that in all probability we are SAT CHIT ANANDA.

This 'you stream' broadcast is my somewhat feeble attempt to LOVE ALLSERVE ALL. ...in order to carry on His work, His mission....but let me add that I know full well I am doing it for myself....for ME As Wavy Gravy says, 'I'm in it for the buzz. It makes me feel good.

I found Swami in1974. He asked me what I wanted and I replied...'a reason to live. That was when He gave me His mission to live for. He placed His torch in my mind and in my heart. Nothing has diminished that flame.

During the 33 years in India I was His instrument in that I wrote books for His children. And the lessons I learned then allowed me to recover from having to leave my beloved India last year. In fact, I landed on my feet here in the west, and immediately began to do a blog on the internet for Sai Graduates. I knew a few devotees who also had to leave and were having a rough time of it. And I never stopped singing His glory

C G STARTING NOTE C

TO YOU SAI BABA WE BOW

TO SHIRDIE BABA WE BOW

YOU ARE THE ATMA INSIDE

ACCEPT OUR PRANAMS DEAR SAI

YOU ARE ESWARA ALLAH RAM

PLEASE ACCEPT MY PRANAMS

FULLFILL ALL MY HOPES AND DESIRES

AND QUENCH THE THIRST OF EGO'S FIRE

I was very ill when I stepped foot on western soil. I felt totally destroyed but He pr opted me up with the blog. I may have been separate from

THE HOLY LAND' BUT NOT FOR A MOMENT WAS I SEPARATE FROM HIM. His grace. His passing away was a shock and a calamity but was bearable.

I really missed the Ashram Sat Sang very much

And so I felt that I should try to recreate that wonderful loving feeling of togetherness. The Sai Center here didn't work for me somehow. At first I thought of trying to organize a splinter group from the organization. A place for westerners to sing songs in English, discuss topics pertinent to our western lives and wear clothes that are acceptable here in Florida.

I knew that it wouldn't work to splinter off because Swami teaches UNITY above all. Then my programmer who is from Chennai told me about 'you stream.' I decided to try to air devotional music etc in English. that other Sai Graduates might use at home in their Sadhana or even in groups. So here it is. I wondered, however, about the service aspect of belonging to a center. Our center here does wonderful things with medical camps and Dentistry. That was when I realized that Bhagavan probably appreciates the loving conversations I've had with the homeless and Down's syndrome people almost every day that I go out.. It's sort of like tossing a pebble in a pond. It has a center but no circumference, going out for ever,

This broadcast along with all the rest of my stuff is a gift to and from Bhagavan. I can never NOT work for His Mission. Later I will include the Rudram English translation and the Sai Astotra also in English and a few blogs maybe, We'll play it by ear. It it doesn't work for you, turn it off. For me it might quench this burning flame to help Swami who certainly does not need my help. Now I just have to try to figure out how to use this 'you stream'( http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sai-graduates ) thing.

With today being the penultimate day of final darshan, before a six week construction phase that is scheduled to begin on 26 May, there have been good number of devotees filing past the Maha Samadhi seeking Divine Darshan.

"The body is made up of the five elements! - Sri Sathya Sai

Samadhi is the supreme state of equilibrium…the Beloved One has always remained thus...and so wherever one may be…if they are consciously aware about His presence and can reflect this state of Samadhi as they walk the path of life, inspite of crossroads, despite narrow lanes and choosing the road less travelled…through hills and dales, the uphills and downhills, the storm and the quiet, the raging

river and the still waters, the thunder and the lightning, the autumn shedding of crimson leaves and the fragrant spring blossoms, the flood and the drought, facing the icy avalanche and the desert sands that burn and singe as well as the waves of the sea that toss with fury, the scorching midday rays and the cool moonbeams that dance and play…managing the swing between the pendulum as taught by Bhagawan…then and there is where one receives Samadhi Darshan of our Precious Lord Who always remained in Samadhi…for Samadhi is the supreme state of bliss and equilibrium.

While a heavy downpour in the previous midnight came with a respite to the ongoing scorching summer, the sky in Parthi remained overcast this evening after a bright sunny day. A rare phenomenon, a 22 degree halo as scientifically called, which forms as sunlight is refracted in hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, was observed over the Parthi sky this morning.

Baba Report

Sai Ram,

I finally arrived in Thailand at Chiang Rai where the Ati Rudram Maha Yagna is going to be held from June 6 to 12. My first impressions were wonderful. People were friendly and helpful.

At the airport in Chiang Mai I was amazed at how helpful customs and visa people were. They went out of their way. Also, near the luggage claim area free Sims cards were given which were empty and had to be topped off.

We stopped at a very small vegetarian restaurant about 5 minutes away. People were very nice.

The 3 hour plus ride to Chiang Rai was pleasant. The road was four lanes most of the way with beautiful scenery.

I am now at the site of the yagna where I will be for the next 3 weeks.

In the evening, we went to Mae Sai next to the border of Myanmar (Burma). Many foreigners come here to cross into Myanmar to get an extension of their visa. We visited a Baba family which seemed to be the only one in town. A few months ago there was an earthquake nearby in Myanmar. Their beautiful 4 story house remained intact although it suffered some damage. One gets the impression that the entire house would have been destroyed if it wasn’t for Baba’s grace.

The big news from Prasanthi is the reason that I am writing so soon is that the construction of the Maha Samadhi will start on May 27th and will continue for about 6 weeks. There will be no viewing during this period. Baba’s chair and footstool will be placed in front of the verandah. Rudram and bhajans will continue as usual.

The Maha Samadhi will be built according to Vedic instructions and tradition. The announcement did not mention anything about the statue.

Great news - the Wish Fulfilling tree remained intact although damaged. It was originally reported that it was destroyed or that only a small part of it remained. But as you can see from the pictures, a large portion of the tree remained.

Announcement Concerning Maha Samadhi Construction

Dear Brother/Sister,

Sairam.

The construction of the Maha Samadhi in Prasanthi Nilayam will commence from May 27, 2011. The Samadhi Darshan therefore will be open till the evening of May 26, 2011.

The Maha Samadhi is going to be built as per Vedic injunctions and traditions, and it is likely to go on for six weeks. Understandably during this period, there will be no Samadhi Darshan, however from May 27, Swami's chair and the Divine footrest will be placed in front of the dais in the Sai Kulwant Hall to facilitate devotees to offer their prayers and salutations.

Please note that the regular Vedam and Bhajan sessions both morning and evening will continue everyday like in the present.

Please do inform all your family and friends about this important announcement.

Thank you.

Loving regards,
Radio Sai team.

Kuala Lumpur!

Sai Ram,

I am now in Kuala Lumpur arriving here in pouring rain as a friend drove me from

Penang to a house opening gathering where there were prayers and a yagna. Unfortunately, we missed the religious ceremony Wednesday night but made it for Thursday morning. It was interesting with prayers, yagna and bhajans. Baba appeared during arathi.

Thursday night, I finally got to go to the Brickfield Center in Kuala Lumpur. The last several times I was here, I couldn’t get there. The meeting was on Thursday nights. It was a long but wonderful evening. The bhajans and prayers were good. They did Gayatri 54 times which is the first time I have ever seen it done that many times during a regular full meeting. It was nice.

There was a lot of use of slides projected onto a screen. We always knew where we were by looking at the screen. The schedule and words to all bhajans and prayers were projected.

Later, when the young adults presented a special program on Buddha, It was multi-media. Pictures and words were projected onto the screen while a recording recited the words that were written. It was nice and thorough.

Afterwards, there was a short skit with 2 people dressed in monk costumes. I couldn’t hear what was said but I believe one of them was Buddha.

People here were also interested in what happened in Puttaparthi and what is happening.

In the front of the meeting room there was a very large picture of Baba. It was not one I have seen in a center before. It was an older one where Baba is among flowers and looking straight ahead. I kept staring at the picture. I felt that Baba’s eyes were moving. I couldn’t tell whether it was actual or an illusion created by the lighting and where I was sitting.

It doesn’t matter as we know that Baba is present at all center meeting and always keeps an eye out on everyone.

It was an evening where Baba took care of me in many ways with finding me a ride to and from the meeting and a place to eat a snack at 10:30 at night.

Earlier I went to the Brickfield Shirdi Sai Baba Center which was in the same area.

Last year, I made a visit a few months after it opened. It was bare except for a statue of Shirdi and a few items. But this year there was a big difference. It was more decorated, had books and tapes for sale and food was available. Also, a lot more people. When I came, it was just before prayer time which was 7:00. They are saving money for a bigger Shirdi Center at another location.

On Friday, we learned that the famous wish fulfilling tree was struck by lightning and only a small part remains (SeePhotos). This is the tree where Baba materialized different fruit on various branches at the same time. It had the reputation that if you made a wish it would come true.

A yogi lived in the cave near the tree. I visited it back in the 70’s but after the difficult climb I decided not to attempt it again.

On Saturday morning there was another house blessing with mantras, yagna and bhajans. During the mantra part, Baba in the white gown walked about. I feel he was there all morning. As I meditated during the mantra part, Baba came to me in the white robe. Among other things, he said, “ I AM Omega” Baba explained that He is the end of everything. There is nothing else. There is no Alpha only Omega. I thought this was great. I felt graced to be showered by his Love as I was spaced out and energized afterwards.

In the evening, it was reunion time as I revisited SS3 Baba Center. Saturday evening was always a full evening with classes and discussion groups for all ages. There was a discussion group for parents as they wait for their children.

SS3 was chaos central from 5:00 to 7:00 with every room in the 4 story building being used. Every room and some hallways were used for bal vikas and young adults by age groups as well as other meetings.

The evening prayers are at 7:00 every night. The weekly Saturday meeting started at 7:30. Bhajans were wonderful. After which there were several presentations including one on the Buddha. Two adults also spoke briefly about life after Baba’s left his body.

On Sunday morning the entire building was used for speech contests at different levels. On Saturday, I visited with my friend who teaches 13 and 14 year old men. Several teenagers did their speeches. They had Baba’s concepts in their talk but had to learn about expressing it.

The future of Baba’s messages will be safe with the younger generation.

Sunday morning found me visiting Kepong Sai Baba Center which is a new center located on the 4th floor. The meeting hall is hugh with very nice altar which had a gold Buddha statue located between Shirdi and Sathya Sai pictures. This center also used a computer and a screen for people to be able to follow the program. I wish more centers would do this. There was a speaker about Baba.

On Sunday evening I returned to SS3 where a discussion was being conduction about Baba and events that had transpired.

Sunday evening consisted of attending a meeting at Sai Nivas which is the only center that I have been to that is following Baba’s guidelines for the center. Many years ago Baba requested that the center have just a picture of him and a candle. Nothing else. Baba preferred that the Sai Baba centers not even have his picture on the altar but just a candle.

Sai Nivas has a big photo of Baba, a chair and candles as well as a few lights. The bhajans and chanting were intense. After arati there was a discussion about Baba leaving his body and what comes now.

Monday morning it will be early to rise to catch a 7 a.m. flight from Kuala Lumpur to Chiang Mai and a 2 hour car ride to Chiang Rai which will be home for about 3 weeks.

Word from Prasanthi is that there are very few people in the ashram now. It could be because it is summer which is vacation time. Several hundred people from Asia came to celebrate Buddha Poornima. Several lectures were held in the Conference Hall which included Anil Kumar as one of the speakers.

It will take time for the ashram to adjust to the new conditions and for devotees to realize that Prasanthi Nilayam has much to offer. The crowds will be back.

16th MAY 2011

Om Sairam dearest Sai Family,

Greetings from the holy land, Puttaparthi the Abode of our beloved Lord, Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Things are looking much better compared to the past one month or so. People are slowly getting used to the fact that Swami has left us ONLY on a physical level.

Usually, in the month of May, there is less crowd in Parthi and it is the same even now. As it is also admission time for Swami’s various campuses, parents and aspiring students are now in Parthi waiting for their results

Inspite of Swami’s Maha Samadhi the turn out for admission test is in big number which reiterates the fact that Swami’s institutions are second to none. The hospitals, canteens, water projects all the service projects started by Swami are also running in the same fashion as they used to and why not, when our Lord Himself has said that as long as the sun and Moon exists, His great work will continue.

The atmosphere in Sai Kulwanth hall is also the same.Even though I am not a great feeler of vibrations or positive energy, but it is a great feeling to be in Sai Kulwanth hall.

The suprabhatam, omkar, veda chantings in the morning and in the evening, two bhajan sessions are being scheduled as usual.

Depending on the rush, devotees are let to have close Samadhi darshan till 10.30 or 11am and in the evening it goes upto 8pm some times.

Yesterday(15th May 2011) evening there were few thousands who turned up for Maha Samadhi darshan. Brother Ratnakar, Swami’s nephew was seen seated on the far end of the dais, sometimes lost in deep thought and sometimes watching the devotees lined up to have the Maha Samadhi darshan. The Samadhi is still the same. Beautifully decorated with flowers and Sai Gayathri is chanted after the bhajans. According to reports, in a few days Samadhi shrine construction will start and apparently they are planning in such a way that Swami’s Maha Samadhi will be one of its kind.

As Sri.Srinivasan announced the other day , all the festivals and Parthi Yatras will continue as usual, Budha Poornima will be celebrated in Sai Kulwanth Hall, as it used to be in the past. There are about 200 devotees from Tamil Nadu on their Parthi Yatra now camping in Parthi.

Meanwhile there are so many reports, emails floating around on the internet about Prema Sai. During the last days of Shirdi Sai Avatar, Swami told that He will come back as Sathya Sai to His close devotees. Probably because of absence of the media, and the communication system being so bad, this NEWS OF HIS ARRIVAL was not known to many in those days. Infact people in this part of India came to know that there is a place by name Shirdi and there existed Shirdi Sai Baba only when Swami announced the world that He is Shirdi Sai incarnate at the age of 14 in the year 1940. On very few occasions, Swami has told very little about His next avatar Prema Sai. Even this is might be part of the divine drama. Due to the fast communication era and also due to some over anxious people, there are so many un necessary stories making rounds and they are completely misleading. These fools who are spreading these rumours are even using the names of over seas Prashanthi Council members and sending out emails about Prema Sai. There are few others who say, Prof.Kasturi who apparently will be re born as Prema Sai’s mother, is now studying in Swami’s primary school and only Swami knew who he (she) is.

There are some who are saying they (Prema Sai’s parents) are already married. There should be a LIMIT for everything. Such news will do no good to any one. More over Swami would never allow us to think of the future.

Sister and brothers no one knows when Prema Sai is going to come. There is no guarantee that we will be alive by the time of His arrival. Even if we are re- born during His era, there is no guarantee that we will be fortunate to be in His fold. The best thing for us to do would be to calm down and practice Swami’s teachings.

When it was announced that Swami left His body on the 24th April 2011 at 7.40 am, two days later, there was one news channel which showed one young couple. Apparently they had a baby boy on the 24th April 2011 at 7.42am (two minutes after Swami left His body). This young couple happen to be from Mandya District where, Prema Sai is predicted to be born. Due to the effect of the present day media, even an illiterate seems to know all the happenings in politics, spirituality, international, sports etc.

Now the couple who seemed to be daily wage laborers claim that their child is Swami’s reincarnation and they say, the child had an unique charm and is also smiling (which is very common with new born babies) and speaking to the news channel’s reporter they said they even have the plans to name their child as Prema Sai. When the reporter asked if they ever had been to Parthi the answer was no.

Sisters and Brothers this is JUST a beginning to a FLOOD of rumours which will be following. There are so many of us, who are more concerned about the arrival of Prema Sai. Please give few seconds to the thought as how fortunate we all are to witness the Advent of Sri Sathya Sai Avatar,to be born during His time on this earth, to see His divine form to our hearts content, to speak with Him both Physically and mentally on innumerable occasions, to listen to His sweet nectarine bhajans and discourses. Of course Many of us still complain that Swami left us without any intimation, without making any necessary arrangements. What is that Swami has not given to us? We asked for His blessings, He showered upon us RAIN OF BLESSINGS. We asked Him to be with us, He said, I am not going to stay with you, but I will be IN YOU. We asked Him to forgive our sins, He very kindly and with utmost love said PAST IS PAST FORGET THE PAST. We asked Him to lead us to God, He said You are not separate from God.

Sisters and Brothers, there is nothing that Swami has not given to us. The knowledge which He left for us is not enough for one life time. Prema Sai will come when He wants to come. Apparently, some years ago, some one asked Swami, as when Prema Sai will come and what will be His duties and Swami replied “That is My business, why are you worried? When you cannot understand Sathya Sai Avatar, when you cannot practice My teachings, what is that you will be able to do during Prema Sai?”

Sisters and Brothers, this conversation itself shows how important it is for us to LIVE the teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Avatar. No one knows if our BERTH is reserved during the time of Prema Sai… Ofcourse, Prema Sai will come. Meanwhile it is our duty to live like our beloved Lord’s true devotees. Lets live in the present. Live in the moment.

Swami has very kindly said that there is no need to think about the past as it cannot come back. Absolutely no use to live in the future as it is uncertain. Out of the blue, there will be another person who will say He is Prema Sai’s incarnation. There will be another report in some news paper or news channel, to create sensation saying that a “miracle” child is born some where in Karnataka.. Lets not run here and there following any such reports. If Prema Sai decides to take us in His fold, no matter where we are, who we are, we are bound to be in His fold. Remember how beautifully our Lord had shown this to us. It is all by SELECTION and not ELECTION. People who never thought that they will visit a remote place like Parthi now are living here , there are devotees from some places which we would have never heard of. There are some devotees who just know Puttaparthi and no other place in India even though they have been coming for the past two or three decades to India. Such is the power of the Divine Magnet. No matter where you are, you are bound to reach His abode, if it is His divine WILL.

There was one more report that another place by name Doddamallur will be Prema Sai’s birth place. According to the news paper, Swami has CHANGED HIS MIND (how fortunate, they can even read GOD’s mind!!!) and now decided to be born in this place called Doddamallur. The news paper further reported that , few months ago, Swami sent 700 people from Puttaparthi to this village to find out if there is any one by name Kasturi in the village. This news appeared in one leading news papers. Some one like Sri. G.Venkatraman or Sri. Prof.Anil Kumar would not stop laughing at this news as it is completely an imaginary one. Of course our monkey minds are very keen to know more about this place. As far as I know, Swami never sent atleast 7 people to any where for such meaningless reasons and 700 people is completely unimaginable.. Knowing Swami He would never do so as He always lives in the PRESENT and He rightly said on many occasions PRESENT IS OMNIPRESENT.

There are some others sending emails about inner voices. Yes Swami speaks to us more fluently and clearly in our inner voice and there is no doubt about that. But this inner voice is for YOU ALONE and not to the whole world. If Swami gives a message to some one, it is absolutely personal. If Swami tells me please don’t go to Bangalore today, it is completely a personal inner view (not meant to the world). There are some others who say a letter was materialized in their home personally hand written and signed by Swami. Yes there is no doubt about that miracle as well as it is not a new thing. The other day some forwarded one similar letter where Swami apparently wrote: “Don’t worry my dear ones, I will give you darshan next Shivarathri” If this letter is to be believed, then it means Swami is not present now. Where did Swami go? God can neither GO nor COME. He is always present as eternal witness. It is the JAGATH that comes and goes and not GOD. Sisters and Brothers lets feel Swami from within. There is no need to believe any rumours. Swami is very much available to you and to me and to every one when ever we are TUNED to Sai. If there is anything ASK HIM directly and don’t believe any inner messages or inner voice that your friend or neighbor receives. Swami doesn’t need any messengers, He doesn’t need any INTERNET connection to pass the message, it is all the INNERNET.

Next time some one forwards you an email, article about Prema Sai please reply the person asking him/her to stop it and delete the same instead of forwarding, as it is a matter of billions of emotions and faith. Let no one be misled.

More importantly we cannot expect the ashram or Radio Sai to condemn every report that is floating on the internet especially on Prema Sai, because they have lot of Swami’s work to be do and can’t spare any moment for meaningless rumours. If there is any legitimate information probably few years down the line, there will be a definite official update until then lets enjoy the TREASURES our Lord has left for us..

Kalpa vriksham

Om Sairam dearest Sai Family,

Last night (19th May 2011), there was heavy thunder storm after which it rained heavily in Puttaparthi resulting in partial collapse of the most famous Kalpa vriksham (wish fulfilling tree as it is commonly called). This tamarind tree was a historic one. According to the legend, Swami as a small boy, used to take some of His close friends and classmates to the tree which is on a hill top at the end of Chitravathi road. There Swami used to ask His friends to think of any fruit or object and He used to pluck the same from that tamarind tree.

There were many instances when He plucked apples, mangoes etc during unseason times that too from a tamarind tree. He even gave laddu and other sweets from that tree. This tree later on was called as Kalpavriksham, the tree which will fulfill your wishes. This tree is one of the main places of visit for every pilgrim coming to Parthi. There were few others who used to tie letters of prayers and wishes to the tree hoping that their wishes would come true.

This tree, even though HIS storic was neglected a bit without proper maintenance. Now only a small part of the tree is left. Hopefully atleast now, some care will be taken to keep this DIVINE MEMORY alive for few more years.

Mean while many locals in Parthi are not happy with this mishappening. Many think it might bring badluck to Puttaparthi. But we should not forget that even this episode is part of the DIVINE LEELA..Probably Complete DETATCHMENT from Physical objects...

With Pranams at the Lotus feet of our beloved Lord,
R.Satish Naik

Turning the Corner

My life here at Peterborough has turned the corner. A Wellness Clinic moved into the building with doctors and nurses and physical therapists. All of them seemed to be very nice people and I am still on TB medicine so they took over my case. Twice weekly they come up to take vital signs and the physical therapist who is particularly nice gave me a really good cane to use. They did blood work too and came to my flat to do an ultra sound of my tummy with a cute little portable ultra sound which had it's own computer showing the pictures. None of this costs me anything which is amazing. Later they'll send me the bill which will be paid by Medicaid.

Anyway the cane has made a big difference in my life, turning it around. I walk outside every day either by myself or with the cute young physical therapist who recognized the picture of Ganesha I have on the wall. It seems that he had dated a girl whose parents were from India. The relationship stopped because her parents were arranging a marriage for her. He says Namestey after each visit. I told him that because of the social policy at the ashram he was the first guy I had had a conversation with in 30 years. He thought that was awesome. 40 years age difference so no problem.

Anyway I joined a chorus there at the Sunshine Senior Center and yesterday we gave a concert. It was unreal, really. Most of the singers had scooters or walkers and of course I had my zippy cane but they stood when they sang their numbers where as I couldn't. I looked at a couple I knew to be in their nineties and felt sort of bad but the lady next to me said others were sitting too.

The soloists were frankly pretty amusing. They sang 'Baby Face' 'They tried to tell us we're too Young' and 'We're getting Married in the Morning' Seriously! They sang in their scratchy old voices which was funny until I listened to myself. Dear God, I've lost my voice too. But I feel so young now with my physical therapist around. I guess he is another one of Swami's gifts but don't get any ideas! There was an elderly black fellow in the elevator the other day who said, “You look like Miss America.” Hmmmm, I just realized that he was probably being sarcastic.

Yes, between the Sunshine Center, my new cane, a constant supply of ice tea and

Christine, my life has turned the corner. I don't think I've mentioned Christine before. Christine is about 40 and cleans the apts around here. Her father is a Phd chemist but she uses too many chemicals I think. Booze. And her 'significant other' drinks too much and verbally abuses her. No one fits in categories anymore. His brother is a lawyer in DC. The tea I drink ia great. Powdered and combined with sugarless sugar makes a great drink. Tea and coffee are very good for memory loss so it's helped me turn these corners. And Christine has become my adopted daughter. She's clever with these electronic devices so I bought her a new computer. Toshiba for 499, a fantastic deal, I hope that it will encourage her to know someone believes in her and she'll cut back on the booze. Significant other is pretty computer savvy too so this might make a difference. She has made a difference in my life with her sweet sunny dispositionand I hope I can make a difference in hers. Another of Swami's gifts.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTO - ( The Emerald Hall)

The year 2002, was the year of Golden days in my Life. I was assigned with responsibility supervising Gold fixing Job, in Kulwant hall, The Prashanthi Mandir and the Central Dome of super Specialty Hospital. Almost every day Swami used to visit the worksite at noon, to inspect the work in progress. When the work was commenced, Bhagavan was spending the summer in Whitefield, Bangalore.

There are many square shaped boxes on the ceilings with ornate designs. We are to load gold on the designs and also to provide a suitable background colours. We made offers for choices of 8 boxes with 8 different colours, with pink, sky blue, Ivory colours etc. To make it 9 in all, we mixed few colours, which looked like “Green”. Swami drove down to Prashanthi Nilayam, to view the samples, and selected this particular mixed up colour.

Swami never uses Red, Yellow, Green, dark blue or any other dark colours, And yet this time this green was the Divine choice. Many elders in Puttaparthi were also wondering and making enquiries with us whether we heard Swami all right. Within a month after commencement of the job, Bhagavan shifted back to Prashanthi Nilayam. Since a massive work, involving over 300 plus artists were working, Swami decided to give evening darshan in Poornachandra Hall. Almost every day, around 1.30 PM Bhagavan will walk into the vacant Sai Kulwant Hall. While walking by the side of Bhagavan, Swami may call us and give directions, or make enquiries. At times small spiritual advises will also be given.

On a particular day, Bhagavan stopped in one place, and looking up on the ceiling asked me, “Do you like this colour?” I replied, “Yes, Swami we like it very much”. Swami then asked, “Do you know the reason why I suggested this colour?” Keeping my hand in “Namasthe” I told that it was Swami’s choice and we only follow the Divine guidance. Swami took hold of my hand, holding the ring I was wearing in my fingers, asked me. “Do you remember, what I told you when I gave you this ring?” I replied that I remember very well. Swami asked me to repeat it word-by-word.

I told, “Swami told me that this is an Emerald Ring. Emerald is for peace, and you need Peace!

Instantly holding the ring Swami spoke,

“Exactly. Thousands of devotees arrive here, with many problems. They have Money problem, child problem, Job problem, Health problem, Childrens’ education problems and likewise many many problems. I cannot go on giving Emerald rings for each and every one. What I have done? This is gold, and there is gold up there. This is emerald, and there is the emerald up in the ceiling. What I am doing is that I am transforming the entire Kulwant Hall into an emrald Hall. Whoever is sitting inside this hall are getting the shower of Divine rays of peace, even without their knowing.”

Swami further told,

“You fool, you should see that Bhagavan had done this for the sake of devotees; Not for the sake of Bhagavan Himself!!!”

Thus revealing this Divine Sankalpa, Swami lovingly patted on my cheek, and started moving away from the spot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now He is My Swami

Time is 5 am. I walked through the darkened living room to find a large pale spot on the carpet. When I looked out the window, there He was....the Shiva moon staring down at me. I was standing in moon beams and I knew it was auspicious.

You know several times before Swami's passing, I was thinking that we Sai Graduates should sort of strike out on our own, you know sort of worship the Lord in our own way. Then my health issues and HIS health issues and passing, interrupted those thoughts. Well, this morning after my ha ha meditation, I connected the dots. It is time now to worship our own divine precious Lord, as we feel the most comfortable

I have always loved the bhajans but this morning some of the old songs we've been singing in the senior center chorus, suddenly came back. 'I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places that this heart of mine embraces, all day through' What is to prevent me from writing Swami lyrics to anything I want. What is to prevent me from saying the Rudram in english and changing afew words. What is to prevent me from worshiping HIM my divine beloved, any way I want to if I feel it brings me closer to HIM. Nothing

Course, you know me, I have to try to share everything. It's compulsive. That's why I'm blogging in fact.

My precious programmer, Madhu has tried to show me how to use 'ustream' It is a radio 'utube' for people who want to tell the world something. I think I'll try that. As a matter of fact I used a DART Taxi the other day. They have taxis for Medicare patients here. Anyway the driver had one of those Fox radio broadcasts on screaming about Obama this and Obama that. I told him to turn it off. He had a foreign accent and told me how this program proved the strength of out democratic country, I told him I didn't like all this hateful talk. So maybe I'll use 'ustream' to speak Swami's words of love and peace. I'll let you know if it works.

One thing about joining a center for worship is the fact that they do group seva, you know like dental and medical camps. Unified seva is certainly a powerful force but my health hasn't been good enough to join in the seva at the Sai center. I feel really bad deep inside when I'm not doing 'seva' for Swami because for all those years in India that's what I felt I was doing when I wrote all those books. I'm writing a book now but it is negative and dark. It's just not working. But our Dearest Lord fulfills our every need doesn't HE? There hasn't been a single walk I've taken outside this building when I wasn't blessed with a hungry homeless person asking for food or money. Yesterday at the center when we did the chorus, there were a few disabled people who needed extra love and attention. They were adult Down Syndrome patients and I was able to pour out a lot of Swami's love from my heart. HE provides all these opportunities.

So I'm back to the old idea of worshiping the Lord my own way, on my own. I know about the letters we've been getting from Goldstein about sticking with the organization. But I feel that it is more important to love Him in our own way, writing little songs, loving lonely people we find along the way. I somehow feel now after HIS passing that HE is more mine even though of course He has been all along....because we are one.

Buddha Poornima

The glory of Sai reigns over all of us. Nothing has changed. Baba is still with us in every way possible. There are those who can see Baba at Kulwant Hall, center meetings and in other situation. Baba is here – Now. He hasn’t gone anyplace, will not go anyplace and cannot go anyplace. We are parts of him. We are him. He is us.

Buddha Poornima is an interesting observance for a tot is used to represent that the physical Buddha was born, achieved enlightenment and left his body all on the same day. His messages from reaching just a few in the beginning has spread to many millions through out the world. The quiet path of going within to find your true self.

Think for a moment of all the religious leaders. They started with a few followers. Eventually the religions spread throughout the world. Some into the billions.

Baba is known by millions. His paths will spread to almost everyone on the planet and maybe elsewhere. This is a reasonable expectation considering the growth of other religions.

One major difference is that the urgency of the world situation requires that it happen rapidly to save us all. It will. Even before Prema Sai reveals himself, the messages of Sathya Sai will have spread to most of the world and have been put into practise.

Devotees are the helpers. We are responsible for being an example and spreading the message. As we Love, do seva and remember god’s name, the glory of Sai will spread.

Of course, Sathya Sai will help in ways that will surprise the world and all of us. Are we ready? The greatest days of Sathya Sai Avatar is yet to come. Be prepared.

Hundreds of people mostly from Asia descended upon Prasanthi Nilayam to observe Buddha Poornima. More details next Report.

I know that the energy of Sai was felt and that all knew that Baba was present.

Attached is part of a discourse given by Baba on May 7, 2001 dealing with Buddha.

Also, attached are 2 pictures of Isaac Tigrett at the 44th Anniversary of the Dharmakshetra as well as some excerpts of what he said.

There is also a letter from Michael Goldstein. It is about 2 weeks old. I am not sure when. It is informative. The article referred to by Dr. Kalam, former president of India, which was sent about 2 weeks ago can still read it at http://media.radiosai.org/Journals/Vol_09/01MAY11/04-kalam-on-Swami.htm

Thought for the Day

17 May 2011 - Buddha Poornima

Lord Buddha's emphasis was entirely on purity in every aspect of daily life. Purity in vision, purity in thought, purity in speech and purity in action. He considered the spirit of sacrifice as the true Yajna (sacred offering). Sacrifice is the means for attaining Nirvana, freedom from the bondage of mundane existence. Buddha was totally opposed to anyone being forced to lead a worldly life against his will. The Buddhist prayer must be properly understood. When the Buddhists say: "Buddham sharanam gachchaami, Dharmam sharanam gachchaami, Sangham sharanam gachchaami" the real meaning of the prayer is: One must divert one's Buddhi (intellect) towards Dharma (right conduct). And right conduct should be aimed at serving society. When this is done, society gets purified.

Baba

Thought for the Day

18th May 2011

The scriptures from the sacred texts describe the codes of conduct for the people during the various stages of life as well as when they occupy various statuses in society. These are adored by followers of all religions. Everyone should consider social codes and individual guidelines given by the prophets and seers as valuable and binding. We must continue to revere them as regulations set up for the good of society and the progress of mankind. For, we must admit that they were framed by Mahapurushas, outstanding sages and well-wishers of the people.

From a Devotee...

Thanks as usual for your honest musings, again, reflecting what others are thinking but dare not say to one and all.

Every day a friend and I chat on Yahoo Messenger and it is usually only about Parthi and the situation there. We wonder how are the people doing there, how will their lives change? We think of Eswara and her poor family. I keep trying to call her but she is never at home. I called while Swami was sick and could only talk to Keshu who cried and cried on the phone, saying they honestly didn’t know what was happening and told me some people said Swami was already gone and some said he was still around (that was a couple of weeks before the end). I tried to call last week but got a recording that the network was busy. The only time I can call is in the morning on weekends and it is hard to remember!

Anyway, we also wonder about the foreigner residents there and if they will remain there, especially people like Persa, Anna Marie, Jean Hudson, Verana and anyone else we know who has been there a long time. And we agree that if we were still there, it would be hard to remain without Swami. Without the physical form darshan to run to, one really needs some sort of project or motivation to carry on day after day, to feel occupied and fulfilled. The only one I’m in touch with there is C, who had to leave due to visa reasons a couple of weeks before Swami went in the hospital, but says she plans to return again in May. She has been translating Radio Sai talks so that keeps her occupied still, I wonder if she will really keep staying on for six months at a time, especially with the irritating new visa rules (she was permanent there for the last 8 years or so).

I wonder how the dreaded office will adjust? Will the office still give foreigners 1-2 months of stay in Prasanthi or will the rules become stricter? Or, will they become more lenient and let people stay for longer times? Yet, who will really want to stay long term now? Yes, many businesses will have to close down and I also think of Karuna Society where I worked and wonder if they will get enough donations to keep running as usual (they were always short on money anyway!), I hope all the animals and employees there will be OK. There was also an article in the paper about how it was difficult to find doctors to come and stay at the hospital before and they are worried it will be harder still in the future.

Anyway, if you hear anything about the situation in Parthi now, I would love to hear about it. I guess we still feel we are Ashramites!

Take care of yourself, hope your health is better now.

Love,

The Good the bad and the Ugly

I've prayed fervently to Swami for a project, maybe a book to write because I need to write! He gave me a plot about a little abused black girl from Fresno. The story is true but I'll never let youall read it because it is too dark. In fact I thought this morning that a good title would be...The Black Child, or even The Black Book but maybe that's too too much black. The child was born in a 'crack house' so it's a little ugly I'll admit.

I sent a copy of the first chapter to a very good friend and she was shocked by it. Well I'll admit being so totally alone for so long in my subsidized flat may have made me a bit gloomy but I think I can squeeze a blog out of the whole subject although I may throw the virtual book into the virtual trash.

She was shocked and said I should get back to my blogs which are uplifting. Hence this blog.

Swami is omnipresent isn't He? He is in ugliness and beauty although He actually said to me once, 'Beauty is God' I've always seen Him everywhere, just like in the Sai Rudram we just posted. He is in those who kill and steal too.

There has been a lot of talk lately about 2012 being 'the last days' I suppose those Mayans could be right what with the cyclones and terrible floods and all that is going on with this 'Arab Spring' thing. This 'spring thing' seems as if it could be leading to a new Arab world but with much suffering first. Swami is in the suffering. He shoots the arrow and makes it hit the mark for transformation. OK maybe its prettier to concentrate on the great end result rather than the bloody war but it's all Him, isn't it?

We have heard some stories about Puttaparthi now that Our Lord is no longer in His body which are not so nice. Drivers are hungry because no one is there to take rickshaws, for instance. A lot of the guys had just bought new ones too. Many of the Kashmiri shops are closing and even doctors are moving their clinics to other towns. Of course there will be confusion and chaos for awhile before things get better. And if the Mayans are right with their predictions, things will get really bad before they get better.

Maybe if we refuse to look at the causes for the decay of our world, our civilization, maybe we refuse to learn the lessons Swami is giving us. Maybe we have to look at these things in order to figure out how to sort them out. Do you think? Or do you think we should only look for the bright light, the good things in life. The spiritual!!

Well I've just been to hell and back. I'm socializing a little more now. But I really have turned a corner. I use my new cane to amble across the street to the Sunshine Senior Center singing in the chorus and reading Time Magazine and smiling at everyone, smiling on the outside and growling on the inside. Maybe I've just answered the question posed by this blog. Maybe it's best to cover up the dark feelings and SMILE, DAMN YOU, SMILE.

I don't think so though. For one thing life is so boring that way. Boring if you don't tell the truth, or allow yourself to focus on the bad things and God knows, I hate to be bored, don't you really?

Where is our Swami

I haven't written in about a month. My health hasn't been good, my brain neurons have been drifting off and Swami left His physical body. I simply couldn't write as my mind was so confused and my heart so full of sorrow. You know He made me leave Him, leave India almost a year before the passing of His body. Yes, I died first and then He left. My soul left, but my body kept on living. Then His body left and His essence, His soul is living. He is definitely still alive. After all He was omnipresent before His body died. In fact, I think He is more alive, stronger and more powerful now then before and all His devotees seem to think so to.

Unfortunately most of His devotees seem to want Him back in that frail form, the one that has given Him such pain and suffering for so many years now. Many of us remember the hours spent in the Hall in Brindavan, stairing at His bedroom window and asking Him to heal Himself. He didn't. He said then that He was not interested in using His divinity to selfishly heal himself EVEN THOUGH, EVEN THEN HIS HIP WAS CAUSING HIM EXCRUCIATING PAIN AND SUFFERING. He used those words. This excruciating pain never left Him from that day to the best of my knowledge and yet all the devotees want Him back in that poor body. Do they want Him back in His car-chair I wonder or do they want Him energetic and fit again. I assume they want Him to heal His body now although He never never did before.

HE has said so many times that that wasn't His body anyway. Was anyone listening? He even said that Sathya Sai Baba was not His real name. Did anyone listen? What is His name. ALL NAMES ARE MY NAME. How many times have we heard that.

I think one of the reasons He pulled out of this form was so that we might take Him seriously and SEE HIM IN ALL FORMS. Yet everything you read now after the passing seems to want disparately to force Him back into the frail body we all worshiped and adored. I THINK WE MUST TRY TO SEE HIM AS OMNIPRESENT.

I have a little game I have played for some time with His Sai Gayatri. I really shouldn't expose my heart this way. When I say, Saishwarya vidhade I plant a kiss on His cheek...ok, really on His mouth. Then when I say Sathyadeveya Dimahe (please forgive my terrible Sanskrit and by the way I always do the Rudram everyday in ENGLISH, I kiss His precious nose. You see I have a terribly flat nose and so I have always admired HIS BEAUTIFUL STRONG NOSE. I kiss it on my special framed picture and then Tano Sarva Prachodinah. I kiss His Ajna, His third eye because Sarva means all and His Ajna sees all. Ok Now we know after His passing, He is truly omnipresent. So I visualize the vegetation on earth, trees, rows of fruit trees, flowers. I visualize the mountains, Himalayans, Colorado, High Sierras...when I adoringly kiss His beautiful nose and I open my eyes and stare out the window at the glorious sky when I say, Tano Sarva Prachodinah because, listen, He is the sky and the mountains and the oceans and vegetation. He is, He is, you must believe it. The sun and the moon are His ear pendants. You know how we've been saying Shirdie is Shakthi, Sathya is Shiva and like that? Well now our Beloved Swami is both at the same time. He is truly Shiva and Shakthi, male and female together.

"Swami left his body and returns to the ten minutes"

Om Sai Ram

Narrated by a brother Sai:

(A bad experience in Trayee occurred when a member of the research group was still a student at the Institute of Sciences).

We students, we have had great experiences in Prashanthi and Vrindaban, but the most memorable experience happened in Trayee Brindavan, the official residence of Sai Baba, where we spent more moments of closeness with Him ...

The sessions with UPS Trayee were most informal, asked individual students about their personal problems, their families and other things. It was one of those moments that occurs following incident, which greatly impacted the students, giving us an indication of the kind of phenomenon that is Sai Baba.

The students had gathered in Trayee and Baba was on his way to his room to his chair. Before the meeting, Baba had given a speech about the purpose of life - on the need for each individual to experience your own divine self, the only way people can achieve break the cycle of births and deaths. In one part of speech Baba also asked those present to remember that they (all) were a part of the Divine from which all emerged and where it all finally merge.

As soon as Swami entered the room, looks at each and stood silently for a while. Then he began to ask each of these, "who you are ... who you are." Surprised by the question, many replied "Swami, I am raja, Swami Shyamkumar" etc ..., many remembering Swami's speech, declaring that they are all part of the Divine, then answered, "I am Sai Baba."

"Swami, any drop of water taken from the ocean has the same quality as the ocean. Since we all come from you Swami, we are all equal to you. "Saying that these justified their response. Then Baba said, "Okay, if everyone is really Sai Baba, then leave their bodies and show me.." Baba heard this request, no student answered. Obviously no one present there could even think of doing what Sai Baba had asked them to do. Sai insisted "Adelantante, go ahead and do it." There was only a silence that filled the hall, then Swami said, "when they experience the Divine in your inner being, shall have all powers to perform acts that are above the laws of nature." ... Saying, he rose suddenly and said "" SEE, I'LL LEAVE MY BODY ", and then his body collapses on the chair, leaving each one of these really impressed.

Everything around in Shock, pandemonium, confusion ... Hell seems to have unleashed. Almost everyone present there rose from their seats and ran toward the body of Baba. Seen what happened, one of the professors at the university went ahead trying to control the situation and asked everyone to remain in their places so they do not do any harm to the body of Baba with their careers and shoving. It took some time to calm the crowd and get back to their seat locations. While people calmed called Baba's personal doctor and what the doctor found shook each of the attendees.

Baba's heart had stopped, there was no pulse at all in his arm and watch the breath (after observing the movement of air under your nose) had stopped completely. Hearing this, each each of those present began to pray to Swami to return to his body and that was too much to ask for them to live in this world without his leadership and without his presence.

Some suggested that sing Bhajans, they began slowly and rose further in all throat singing. Five minutes later, the bhajans were at their strongest point and the crowd was already in his 2nd song, each one focused on Baba's body for signs of life. If there were any, would not have even noticed.

The third song ended and the 4th song was sung, which were later noticed a small movement in the toes of Baba. It ran the story and the songs turned into murmurs. The prayers were praying to Baba increased with increasing force to return soon to his body. When the songs were increasing, the movements became even more significant, and when it concluded the bhajan Baba had opened his eyes to the great joy of everyone present.

Excited by the spectacle they had witnessed, people began approaching Baba again, who asked them to return to their seats. Baba then asked them to stop bhajans at the end of the next song. The silence in the corridors, all eyes were fixed on Baba.

Baba spoke a few seconds later, "Those who live in bliss will not be restricted by the ordinary laws of nature. What you witnessed here is just a small example of what is possible for those with a higher level, a level at which I've always been, am and always will be. Remember that God will not find out, He is within you. Understand that the experience and joy of happiness really lie not in comfort but in joy, in union with God. "

This event was discussed for a long time both in Prashanti as in Vrindavan. Demonstrated once again Baba control over nature and more importantly to leave his body and return only by his will, proved beyond any doubt that he really is, as he says "MRITUNJAYA" He who has overcome death, he who lives forever.

Another wonderful day !

Sai Ram,

Another wonderful day especially with slightly cooler temperatures. A few more people tonight. Ashram is not crowded.

Wow! As I am typing this we were hit with a fierce thunder and lightning storm with a windy cooling breeze

An announcement was made tonight about Wednesday, May 4th program. The evening program will be speeches by respected elders stating at 5:00.

The morning program depended on who you ask. After Anil Kumar made the announcement, I asked several people what was said. All agreed that it was starting at 6:30 and ending either 10 or 10:30. Some say the 11th day ritual is to have the soul reenter the body. Others say that it will be special Vedic chanting . Some have even said there will be a drama. The book press says that it is the Redawn of the Avatar with vedic rituals from Updanishadic Teachings.

Some people think the ritual is being done to convince Sai Baba to reenter his physical body and be with us physically once again.

I believe there will be another program Thursday and, of course there will be something on Easwaramma Day.

Attached is an email that was posted that came from Leonardo Gutter who is a member of the Prasanthi Council has been a devotee for at least 30 years. It is a report about Prema Sai.

One surprise was when the number 700 was used. I am unaware of such a large number of people leaving here. Of course, it can be unnoticeable. But usually word leaks out. I think it is possible that the number was much lower but I feel the information is correct considering the source.

However, the information that I had was that Prema Sai wouldn’t reveal his identity until about the age of 20. It would seem that if people know where he is going to born, they will watch and identify him at birth. Also the information indicates that Prema Sai will be born in 2020.

We will see how this plays out.

Some observations about tonight’s darshan.

I saw Baba walking around where the chanters and singers were even while Rudram was being chanted. He stayed around through bhajans. He was happy and blessing everyone.

I observe some light energy coming form the tomb. At this point, it was not so strong.

But I suspect it gets stronger when people walk by it.

The auto accident that Ratnakar had helped protect him during Baba’s hospitalization and even now. Negative energy is having a hard time reaching him.

There used to be very tall invisible beings standing by the columns protecting the Hall, Baba and us. Now there are short men with spears and tall men that reminded me of Subramanyam. The spears are not to kill but to eliminate negative energy.

Many people here, meaning staff and even volunteers, will be replaced by men in white who will have greater purity.

There is one energy field that covers the entire hall.

Also, the time will come when the streets of Prasanthi Nilayam will be lined with gold. Just by stepping into the ashram people will be healed.

Thought for the Day

3 May 2011

Love should not be rationed, on the basis of caste, creed or economic status, or intellectual attainment of the recipient. It should flow full and free, regardless of consequence, for, it is one's nature of love, to seek out the dry dreary wastes, which love can water and make fertile.

OM SRI SAI RAM SPECIAL MUSINGS

[IT IS NOT EMPTINESS BUT A SUPER COSMIC FULLNESS]

RECORDED ON APRIL 29, 2011.

At the outset, I offer my loving Pranaams at the Lotus Feet of our Beloved Lord Sai.

Dear Listener. This is a talk that I never thought or dreamt I would ever have to give. In a sense, the events of the last one month or so have gone by like a surrealistic experience, and suddenly I feel bewildered. More explicitly I am wondering, as perhaps many listeners are, whether the world as it existed before 28th March was real, or the world as it appears today without that Beautiful Form is real, the earlier experience being just a dream. Inevitably, this reminds me of a story that Swami used to narrate occasionally, back in the old days.

The story goes like this. One evening, after a rather tiring day at the royal court, Emperor Janaka returns late to his chamber. Welcoming the monarch, his Queen asks him to freshen up and get ready for dinner. Janaka nods as if to say yes but, overcome by exhaustion, slumps into a chair and dozes off. During his nap, he has a disturbing dream from which he later wakes up with a start. As he looks around, the scene is very different from what he was seeing just moments ago–no forest, no tiger chasing him, etc. Puzzled, Janaka begins to mutter, “Was that real, or is this real?” The Queen keeps on reminding the Emperor about dinner but the latter continues to remain in a stupor, constantly repeating the same question. Palace medics are summoned but they are unable to help. Ultimately, the assistance of Sage Vasishta is sought and when he arrives, Janaka is still asking the same question. With a smile on his face the Sage places his hand on Janaka’s shoulder and gently observes, “O king, neither is real; you alone are!” Vasishta was of course referring to the Atma within, dismissing what is experienced both in the waking as well as in the dream state as illusory. In other words, Vasishta was telling Janaka that what is Real lies beyond the experience of the senses and the thoughts of the Mind, both of which are transient.

Alas, we have no Sage Vasishta to guide us out of our confusion but luckily, anticipating precisely the situation we face today, Swami has prepared us through innumerable Discourses in the past. Inevitably, I have to make references to them; however, all that would have to wait for the future; right now, I have just enough time for some reflections on recent events.

For me personally, this is the way it all started. Every evening evening during February and a good part of March of this year, I along with a couple of others would go for Darshan a little after 6 PM or so, since almost invariably Swami came out rather late. His arrival could be anywhere from 7 O’clock to as late as 8.15 PM and occasionally even later. Devotees waited patiently, while the boys sang Bhajans vigorously. By the way, Bhajans would commence punctually at 5.30 PM; however, when Swami came out the tempo of singing would become really charged. For His part, Swami would just sit there quietly enjoying the Bhajans, making everyone in the vast Sai Kulwant Hal forget about time. Bhagavan did have the magical power to make time disappear or lose meaning in His presence.

The Sai Kulwant Hall would always be packed to capacity, and not a soul moved when Swami gave Darshan, including the children from the local schools who came taking turns. Finally, around maybe 9 PM, sometimes even later, Swami would take aarathi, linger for a while, raise both His hands in loving benediction, and slowly leave. For over a year, it used to be that Bhagavan would come in a mobile chair (popularly referred to as car-chair) and leave the same way. However, the routine began to change, almost imperceptibly. He would still come using the chair but return using the Porte chair-car. Still later, He started coming by car and returning the same way. Towards the end on some days, the car would come to the porch and halt, after which aarthi would be offered almost immediately, without Swami even coming out of the car – all this on days He came out. There were also days on which Swami did not come out all, and I shall now briefly refer to that.

Basically, if Swami was rather tired, He would give an indication whereupon there would be a signal from Yajur Mandir and aarthi would be given to the Chair. Initially, it was the morning Darshans that Swami started skipping but not very often. When that happened, I inevitably recalled the days when we used to rush around 6.15 AM for morning Darshan. In winter particularly, it would be still dark and yet, all the devotees would be there in Sai Kulwant Hall, waiting for Swami to come out. And He always did, gliding out of the Poorna Chandra Hall, even as the Sun came out in the East to herald a new day. By 7.30 AM or Swami would have taken the first batch of devotees selected for Interview into the famous Interview Room, and all of us with work to do would rush back to our rooms to grab a bite of breakfast and go to college, office or whatever; that would be the case on week days. On Sundays, we would rush for breakfast while Swami was in the Interview Room, and be back in our seats by the time the Interview ended.

Bhajans would start on the dot at 9 AM and around 9.20, it would aarathi! Swami would then go into the Interview Room and from there into the adjacent Dining Room, followed by the Trustees and have lunch with them. Swami would come out in about seven minutes, leaving His guests struggling to finish, wash their hands and come behind Him. Bhagavan would then take His leisurely walk back to the Poorna Chandra Hall making His way through the ladies section, picking up letters and chatting with various people on the way. By 9.35 AM or so, Swami would have entered the PC Hall as we refer to it here, and one more morning Darshan would have passed into history.

I am recalling all this just to drive home the point how the scene never remained the same with Swami; He always kept changing the script. Getting back to late February-early March period of this year, on many evenings, Swami was rather tired to come out, and the signal would come to give aarathi usually around 6.15 PM or so.

Let me now cut to Saturday, March 27, 2011, the day before Swami was admitted to the hospital. That evening aarthai was given early, after which the current Vice Chancellor Prof. Prasad, former Vice Chancellor Prof. Pandit and I went to Swami’s residence, as we often did. We were told Swami was not well, that two doctors whom Swami lately permitted to attend on Him were upstairs with Swami and that some monitoring equipment was being brought to keep a watch on His health condition. At that time, no one had the slightest indication whatsoever that a crisis was fast approaching.

Night passed and when I checked next morning, I was told that Swami had rested and spent an uneventful night. Around 3 O’clock or so in the afternoon, Prof. Pandit called me to say that an ambulance had come to Swami’s residence Yajur Mandir and there was some activity around there. It seemed as if Swami was being taken to the hospital, and so we both rushed there. It so happened that though we left a bit later, our car almost caught up with the Ambulence, not only because we took a short cut but also for the reason that the ambulance was being driven slowly. Anyway, to get on with the narration, both of us managed to be there when Swami was helped out of the ambulance at the entrance to the hospital. Although Swami went by an ambulance, He was actually on a wheel chair and not on a stretcher as I had imagined. Prof. Pandit who was by my side all the time tells me that Swami gave him a gentle smile. Little did he know that that smile was going to become his most treasured memory.

Swami’s wheel chair was whisked away to the special elevator meant for patients, and soon He disappeared from sight, having been taken to we did not know where. Meanwhile, Prof. Pandit and I both were shown to a room upstairs where the operation theatres, the cardiac catheterisation lab and ICU’s are located. We waited silently and anxiously in the room we were sent to, while the clock kept ticking. One hour passed and not surprisingly, both of us became somewhat restless. Coming out of the room where we were till then, we tried to see if there was any doctor nearby who could give us some information. There was a surgeon around and he was standing at the end of the long corridor, near to where the cardiac operation theatres are. He signalled to us to join him and told us that Swami was undergoing a procedure in the cardiac catheterisation lab which was further down the corridor. He did not elaborate on the procedure but, after some time, told us that the procedure was probably approaching the end, judging by the test equipment coming out of the lab.

Shortly thereafter, we saw the Chief Nurse of the Hospital standing in the corridor right close to the catheter lab (which, by the way, was more than 50 metres or so from where we were) giving strict instructions to some of the staff nearby. It looked like Swami was ready to be moved from the catheter lab to a special ICU, located across the corridor. Meanwhile, we saw many people disappearing from the corridor into what we presumed was the ICU by way of getting it ready. Roughly about two hours after Swami arrived at the hospital, we saw a hospital bed on wheels come out of the cath lab, with a lot of staff in surgical dress, walking along with the bed, one person holding a drip bottle while others wheeled along the monitoring equipment to which Swami had been connected.

It seemed as if the crisis had been brought under control, and everything was looking good, at least for the moment. Swami having been transferred to the ICU, things began to settle down and we started getting a clearer picture of what actually happened. Apparently, Swami’s heart-beat had become irregular and He needed a pacemaker implantation. That was why He had been taken to the Hospital, and the pacemaker duly installed. Thousands of people the world over walk around with pacemakers, and if you saw them you would never be aware of it. We thus thought, “OK, Swami now has a pacemaker and everything would be fine in a few days. After that He would be back in Yajur Mandir, and maybe, after resting for a few days, life would return to normal, possibly with a revised schedule to minimise physical strain to Swami.”

By around 7 or maybe 7:30 PM or so, Prof. Pandit and I returned to the Ashram. All this, I remind you once more, happened on the evening of 28th March. Next morning, I checked with one of the people who had access to minute by minute status of Swami’s health, and the info I got was that the night seemed to have gone off well. Around 2 PM or so – remember, I am now talking of the day following the admission to the hospital, i.e., 29th March – Prof. Pandit called me to say there was hyper activity in the hospital and Swami’s condition was causing anxiety. This scared me and so both of us rushed immediately to the hospital. Meanwhile, with the rumour factory working overtime all cell-phone companies began to mint money. On our way to the hospital, Prof. Pandit and I saw a helicopter parked in the Sri Sathya Sai Airport, and that said something.

When we reached the hospital, Director Dr. Safaya, who knew both Prof. Pandit and me quite well, showed us a good place where we could wait. This was quite close to the catheter lab and in a short while, we saw Swami being whisked into the lab, the trolley-bed being rolled along and guided by a battery of hospital attendants and doctors in surgical gowns. Though we were close, it was not possible to see Swami; there were so many doctors walking along with and around the trolley-bed. The doors of the cath lab were shut and we waited. After about forty minutes or so, there was quite a buzz outside and it seemed as if Swami was being taken back to the ICU. Sure enough, the two specialist doctors who had come by helicopter from Bangalore, came out looking as if not only was what they had come to do had gone off well but also that they were ready to leave. Indeed, they had already removed their surgical gowns, slipped on their shoes, and walked away, presumably to be driven to the airport. A couple of minutes later, I saw the trolley-bed being moved back to the ICU. This time I was, thanks to Dr. Safaya, able to catch a momentary glimpse of Bhagavan’s face from just about a couple of feet away; the rest of the body was of course covered by hospital sheet. That was the last time I saw Swami before He shed His mortal coil. Being under the influence of sedatives, His eyes were closed. That was no doubt to be expected; yet that sight was like a huge electric shock, considering that until not so long ago, on many days I would find Swami’s face beaming and having an indescribable glow, even around 8:30 PM after a long and tiring day.

So why did they take Swami to the cath lab and what did they do there? And, what about the doctors who had flown in from Bangalore? I got all the answers about two hours later from Dr. Safaya. Looking quite tired but somewhat relieved, he dropped into a chair in the corridor next to me and Prof. Pandit and said, “Hey! You fellows are drinking tea! What about me?” We were sipping some tea from a paper cup, provided by some kindly soul doing seva there. We signalled once more to that person to give a cup of tea to Dr. Safaya. After taking a few much needed sips, Dr. Safaya told us that while Swami heart was not damaged, it was weak and the pumping action inadequate. The doctors from Bangalore had therefore inserted what was known as a balloon pump. This would considerably lessen the burden on the heart since the balloon pump would take care of most of the pumping.

Six or so days later, the balloon pump was withdrawn. However, the procedure had to be done with enormous care and ever so slowly. For us anxious to hear the news that the pump had been safely withdrawn, it was a long wait, maybe ten hours, I cannot remember exactly how many. Shortly thereafter when Dr. Safaya came out he looked greatly relieved. He even smiled a bit and said to me, “Now He is on His own,” meaning that Swami’s heart was now functioning satisfactorily without any external assistance what so ever. Obviously, that was great news, worth waiting for.

At that time, everyone was quite hopeful but soon started a roller-coaster ride of sorts. It turns out – so a specialist doctor explained to me – that beyond a certain age, when the heart gets affected, it impacts other organs also, most often, the lungs and the kidneys. If earlier the heart had to be given help from outside, it was now the turn of these two vital organs to receive such assistance. Although it is these two organs that were often in the news, as Dr. Narendra Reddy explained to us during the conversation that I had with him and which was broadcast by Radio Sai, all organs had to be watched carefully. Thus it was that all kinds of experts had to be called in some from within the hospital itself, some from other hospitals in the country, and some even from America. All that ground has been covered and I shall not go through it again. But this much I can say. Medically, the various parameters were sort of holding on with minor fluctuations here and there maybe; however, all this needed strong support from external systems.

Slowly, the organs started showing signs that they might not be able to come back to normal; however, one could not be sure either. After all this was not a just a mortal patient but Swami, and almost everyone including the doctors had the faith that Swami would defy all the medical books and research papers written by man and bounce back. In fact, one day I asked Dr. Safaya, “Doctor, how long would a normal patient and with a body age same as Swami have lasted with this multiple organ problem?” The doctor’s reply was short, “Certainly not this long,” which of course enormously boosted my confidence. I should mention at this point that though from a biological point of view Swami’s body was made up of the five elements just as all living bodies are, there were several exceptional aspects to it that came entirely from Purity rather than Divinity, as Swami Himself once explained to students. For example, not a single hair was grey. During the mid nineties, Swami often complained about loss of hair but also said it would come back. Indeed, it did after some time, though not to its fullest extent as in earlier times. And then there were His eyes. Not once did Swami have to ever wear spectacles, even for reading a piece of paper – not once. But everyone around Him needed at least one pair if not two, one for reading and another for distant vision. Thirdly, not once did Swami need the services of a dentist.

To get back to the main narrative, days passed while medical anxiety slowly began to mount silently. At the same time the confidence that Swami would not leave us also soared. After all, said everyone including myself, “Just look at how many thousands if not millions are praying all over the world! There are Christians praying in Madras. There are Sikhs praying in Delhi, and there are the villagers of Puttaparthi who are praying for their own Swami. Bhagavan has therefore no choice but to sit up, walk away from His bed, freshen up and come out, exactly as He did at the time of the famous Goa appendicitis leela.”

Alas, that was not to be. There is absolutely no doubt that Swami could have done all that and more. However, He chose not to. He had, on many occasions given hints, both privately and even publicly, that He could go anytime He chose to, overriding all His earlier pronouncements. Further, He has explained clearly in many of His Discourses that while the Avatar is an Incarnation of God and comes down with His full compliment of Divine Powers when He manifests as a Poorna Avatar as it was in this case, He would, at the same time, not only respect the Laws of Nature as ordained by Him when it came to His own body, but also bow to Time, of which He was always the Absolute Master. Thus it was that Swami would sometimes get tired, catch a cold, get fever, etc. As He took care to explain, not all His body ailments were due to His taking on the sufferings of others.

Around 7:30 on the morning of April 24, I received a phone call from a close friend who whispered, “Swami is in a critical condition.” However, I was not alarmed since my confidence that Swami would go the very edge and bounce back miraculously had soared to new heights. Twenty minutes later, I got another call. This was from one of the trustees who began. “Sad news. Swami passed away at 7.40 this morning. Now this is what we would like you to do….,” and went on to give me my first assignment in the world where the Light was there but in a passive form, having risen to shine and guide from above. It was a silent signal that the time had finally come for all of us to look for Bhagavan beyond the Form for instructions and guidance, which then had to be followed meticulously. Along the line, we had to work harmoniously with each other, smashing every ego-built barrier. In short, we HAD to become one family, united under God and working for common good. It was not enough to merely chant: “May peace prevail in all the worlds,” etc; it was now our job to make that happen. The examination bell had rung and God our coach as well as teacher had now become the invigilator!

Oh yes, for a while we would all cry and swear we cannot live without Swami and so on. But that has happened before, several times in fact, after Rama, after Krishna and after Shiridi. But soon, we must wake up to our new responsibilities, realising that it is for this test that Swami had been physically preparing us in diverse ways.

Swami Vivekananda is reported to have said, “Death of a near one always makes everybody very philosophical. However, that mood wears off in three days or even less, after which it is business as usual.” That comment applies in the case of the death of an ordinary mortal. The present situation is totally different since there is no question of death. Swami has merely shed the Form to exclusively remain Formless, playing a different and more subtle role. Rising to the occasion, we need to, as Swami Himself had said in many Discourses, “wake up, arise, listen to the call of the Divine Master, and accept our new responsibility.” The world is still out there, offering us more opportunities for service than ever before; all that is needed is to rise to the occasion.

I would like to close this talk with a brief recall of what Swami once said while bringing His Divine Discourse to an end. I do not recall the occasion but I do remember His message because of its depth, power and also for another reason that I shall mention shortly. Swami said in a powerful voice [and this is a paraphrase].

Dear students! When you sing Bhajans here, don’t imagine that they would impact only the people currently assembled here in the Sai Kulwant Hall. True, the sound waves coming from the various loud speakers would be heard only by the devotees here. True those sound waves would also be heard throughout the Ashram. However, besides these sound waves, subtle waves are also generated. You cannot see them and in fact you do not even know about them. They are ripples in the Ocean of Consciousness. Those ripples can travel not only all over this planet but to the very edge of the physical Universe and beyond. They will never dampen nor dissipate but remain for ever. They would penetrate everywhere, including the pillars, the structures and whatever you see around here. Indeed, the vibrations from every Bhajan that you sing would remain embedded in them for ever. Further, every day, there would be fresh additions, as a result of which the intensity of the built-in spiritual vibrations would steadily grow. The more passionately you sing, the greater would be the stored sanctity. The more love you add to your feelings as you sing, the greater would be the enhancement of sanctity. Thus, by having sacred thoughts while seated here and by singing Bhajans with Pure Love in your Heart, each of you can leave behind an invaluable legacy.”

That in brief was what Swami said. All of which reminds me very strongly of what the Headmaster of a school where I was studying in the late forties said one day after morning assembly and prayer. Those words are still ringing in my ears. He said, “Boys, some of you must be wondering why we go through this routine day after day. To some of you, this may even appear meaningless and also a complete waste of time. But here is the reason why we make you come here day after day. While some of you might not, many of the boys that come here do pray and sing sincerely. The subtle vibrations from those prayers and songs remain for ever bound in the walls of this assembly hall, saturating this place with sanctity that increases day by day. By spending some time here every day, you become at least a bit more spiritually purified. Why do you think people go in large numbers to some temples but not to others? That is because thousands of good people and many saints have worshipped in those temples earlier, conferring thereby the subtle fragrance of saanithyam.” By the way, the word saanithyam might be loosely translated as eternal sanctity.

Getting back to our Headmaster, he continued, “When an ordinary person goes to such a temple, that very saanithyam spiritually cleanses that person to a certain extent. That also is the reason why people of this country want to bathe in sacred rivers. These are rivers where innumerable rishis and saints have had a dip, making that river that much sacred. If you and I bathe there, a bit of that sanctity seeps into us, making us better persons.”

Dear Listener! There is a particular reason why I am ending on this note. It you think about it carefully, you would realise that Prashanti Nilayam is THE place that has been the abode of the Avatar of the Age, from the time He moved out of the Paatha Mandiram in 1950. During the six decades that followed, how many Darshans He has given here! How many festivals He has celebrated here! How many plays and dramas He has seen here! And, how many Discourses He has delivered here! Just think of how much Pure and Divine Love He has personally poured out in the process, all those years! Have they all vanished into Time? At the worldly level, they have indeed become memories. But at the subtle and Causal level, the Sai Kulwant Hall is the most Love-charged spot not only on the face of this planet but indeed the entire Universe. For, was this not where the Divine Chancellor, Swami to all of us, showered His Love non-stop, both at the individual and collective level?

The Form would no longer be visible to our eyes. However, if we care to open the eye of our Heart, the Third Eye if you prefer to call it that way, we can have the grandest and the most blissful experience possible. Remember, even the best Steinway piano or the rarest Stradivarius violin cannot produce great music when it is not properly tuned! In other words, if we want to experience Eternity, we can do so only if our Hearts are properly tuned before going into the SKH. If we go in without tuning, all we would see is a physical emptiness that would make us cry instead of feeling uplifted.

Swami has not gone. He is very much here, there, above, below, around, etc., indeed everywhere. However, we need a new vision to see Him. That is the essence of the last part of my talk today.

I think I shall end here. The new situation has, naturally, placed many new responsibilities on us, and I have many more things to say concerning these as also about Swami’s teachings; however, those would have to wait for other occasions.

For now, I would, as always like to conclude by offering this talk at the Lotus Feet of our Beloved Swami.

Thank you for listening, and Jai Sai Ram.
